2bak I Munden @ The Blue Tent, Roskilde Festival, June 29th 2002

2bak I Munden is a strict underground hip-hop group in the classic sense. With the two rappers John Svendsen and Dun-Star on the mics and DJ Guller on the wheels. Their music is clearly east-coast inspired with mid-90’s production by X-Farm and MC’ing that varies from story telling and make-believe characters to classic microphone self-glorification.
2 vinyl LP’s deep they’ve created an audience of backpacking hip-hop fans,
but aside from last year’s Århus Took It, they haven’t really been exposed outside of traditional jams.
Even though hip-hop is bigger than ever in the mainstream Roskilde’s
rap selection this year was far from the standard it had in Typhoon’s hey-day with all American independants. Still it was fun to see how their alternative would work out. With only a handful of Danish rap-groups playing, 2Bak I Munden, who’ve had little press until now, is a surprising but good choice, since they stick so heavily to the traditional formula.

Traditional doesn’t mean boring though, and the weed-happy 2Bak I Munden lived up to their name by boycotting the introduction by the forever wack hostess of the Blue stage, and having a pre-recorded Ilmer of “Ilmer’s corner” hype the crowd with a hilarious intro. After it was established that the audience was indeed baske, 2Bak I Munden came to the stage in a interesting manor. Joined by Ama’r’s Isbjerg currently rapping in Fuld Pensum and Denmark’s most beautifullest Konen, they acted out the story from “Hiph4” The rappers all came out solo to rap as if they were part of a theater play, which worked well to introduce themselves individually.

Since 2Bakken went on an hour after L.O.C. the audience was
thinning out, so the vibe had changed from party’ing to chilling out, which
fit the slow, bass-heavy grooves, and laid back delivery of the MC’s nicely.

The tall MC’s and DJ played more of songs off of their LP’s such as “Skiveskårne Rumhistorier” and the talkbox heavy “Volume Kontrol”, the verses were traded, the records were scratched and the songs were cool, but it didn’t set off too much ruckus in the crowd. lyric-wise the two MC’s John Svendsen and Dun-Star deliver rhymes with a steady pace, and while they use too many multisyllables, they switch up their flows, so that the content shines and makes you listen to the funny stories and ideas. A fun idea I particularly remember a rhyme and scratch remake of an old Malk De Koijn prod.

And speaking of Malk De Koijn, Blæs Boogie, dressed in b-boy gear, showed up for the concert’s finalé, the title track from their LP: “Whap Wheefer, Whespect.” The song is an uptempo represent-track, with fresh lines like: “Kommer buldrende, med Jet Li på jet-ski og Schwartzenegger på skuldrene.” making sure the show finished on a high-note.

In the end what we got was a solid hip-hop show with quite cunning jokes, tight rap flows and excellent scratching and mixing over beats with classic funk groups. I feel it could have been even better if the group had given us more of their slamming songs like “# 1 rap ord.” Still as a hip-hop purist it was cool to see a Danish rap group playing Roskilde without relying on dancers, live instrumentation or American instrumentals. Just some old boom bap.
