L.O.C. @ The Blue Tent, Roskilde Festival, June 29th 2002
After Roskilde Festival found out P-Diddy & The Bad Boy Family had cancelled the European tour 2 months earlier, the bad press and the previous year’s lack of hip-hop content probably forced them to find replacements. One of the replacements was Denmark’s own bad boy, the Århus V banger L.O.C.As winner of the Danish Hip-Hop Award for best rapper, album and new artist, Liam O’Conner has gone from being the next big thing to an established artist in record time with regular Boogie and MTV Nordic rotation.
His Roskilde performance had show-start at the rediculously early time of 12 AM, but nomatter, ’cause the tent in front of Blue stage was nicely filled with what proved to be mostly dedicated L.O.C. fans plus the odd hippie and the rest of hip-hop Denmark waiting to see what kind of wake-up show Store 6 would put on.
Following the steady chants of “L-O-C” from the audience the
big Danish-Irish came out looking like we know him, drunk and focused.
With the regular set-up of TrooLS the Kid as co-rapper, Dr. Ral as hype man and Rune Rask controling the beats he strolled right
into “Dominologi” with the instant classic hook: “Store 6 begynder I er ikke parate tilL.O.C. vi er kommet for at starte det / Med en doktor grad i Dominologi / Booya på din røv ho spillet er forbi” supplied by a leisure-suited Joker J sitting on a low-rider bicycle. “Absinthe” was played shortly after, and the depraved, decadent tribute to the controversial intoxicant was a big hit.
The Tabu Records artist proved his knack for showmanship by
adding new elements to his performance for every song. One of the first
add-ons was a live drummer rocking over the music, which gave the sound
more depth. Then came L.O.’s Århus V homie, and a rapstar in his
own right, U$O who traded rhymes with Liam for a few tracks, followed by a gang of female dancers to get the testesteron level up, and so forth.
The new additions stayed on for the remainder of the show and this worked
really well, as the stage first gave solo-spotlight to L.O.C. and then
later filled up with life. One of the funnier moments came when Buddha
Glitter aka Simon from Banjos Likørstue played
some rock & roll guitar and battled drummer while doing a double hell-burner.
L.O.C. played most of the hits from Dominologi such as “Drik din
hjerne ud”, “Fra min blok til din blok” and “20 Måder”
although not hearing “X-Hos” surprised me, but I guess they
had to leave out something for the gang of new tracks.
The new tracks came from F.I.P.G.C.‘s new EP, as well as Suspekt‘s upcomming album, with advances for both, + Liam’s singles
thrown out to the crowd. The show lost some of it’s flow near the end, when the lesser known material was played, as it turned into more of an F.I.P. than L.O.C. concert. I’m sure that’s what was intended, but the audience didn’t to understand why Liam was playing the back-ground. He did come back to play remix versions of his hits, tell a few jokes and announce that Tabu recz would be playing some street soccer a little later.
Despite his huge sucess, L.O.C. has his share of haters saying that
he glorifies crime and drugs to an audience that includes kids, but that’s
hard to hold against him when you see the huge crowd-appeal his material
has. As entertainment the show was one of Roskilde’s best, as L.O.C. and
his crew in unison commanded the tent with hardcore rhyming and slamming
west coast beats.
